How to make AI-assisted writing sound natural
Natural writing is not about “beating” a detector. It is about making deliberate choices: say something specific, vary the rhythm, remove filler, keep the facts, and sound like a person with a point of view.
1. Start with the point, not the runway
AI drafts often delay the useful sentence with broad scene-setting. Delete the universal opening and lead with the fact your reader needs.
In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, businesses are increasingly recognizing the importance of cybersecurity.
Small businesses reported 43 attempted phishing emails per employee last quarter, so our team changed the login process.
2. Replace vague importance with evidence
Phrases like “plays a crucial role” and “cannot be overstated” claim significance without showing it. Add a number, observation, mechanism, consequence, or concrete example.
Customer feedback plays a crucial role in improving the user experience.
Three of the five most common support requests came from a button users could not find. Moving it above the form cut those requests in half.
3. Let sentence length follow meaning
Uniform sentences create a metronome effect. Combine details that belong together. Then use a short sentence when a conclusion deserves emphasis. Read the paragraph aloud: if every pause lands at the same interval, change the rhythm.
4. Remove mechanical transitions
“Furthermore,” “moreover,” and numbered sequences are useful when they express a real relationship. They become distracting when every sentence announces its position. Often the relationship is already obvious, so no transition is needed.
Firstly, the update improves speed. Secondly, it reduces errors. Furthermore, it offers a simpler interface.
The update loads reports faster and catches duplicate entries before submission. We also reduced the form from nine fields to five.
5. Prefer verbs over abstract nouns
“Conduct an evaluation of” usually means “evaluate.” “Provide assistance to” means “help.” Strong verbs reduce length and make responsibility clear.
- “make an improvement to” → “improve”
- “perform an analysis of” → “analyze”
- “facilitate the implementation of” → “help implement”
- “has the ability to” → “can”
6. Keep necessary uncertainty
Do not remove every hedge. Words such as “may,” “likely,” and “in this sample” can be essential for accuracy. Delete empty caution (“it is worth noting that”), but keep uncertainty that reflects the evidence.
7. Add information only you can supply
Your experience, constraints, examples, audience knowledge, and decision criteria create voice. Replace generic recommendations with what happened, what you chose, and why. Never invent a personal anecdote to make text seem human.
8. Protect meaning during rewriting
A smoother sentence can still become less accurate. After every substantial rewrite, compare it with the source and verify:
- Names, dates, quantities, quotations, and technical terms are unchanged unless intentionally corrected.
- Cause and correlation have not been swapped.
- Qualifiers and exceptions still apply.
- Citations support the revised claim, not only the original wording.
- The tone fits the reader and the context.
A five-minute final pass
- Underline the single most useful sentence in each paragraph.
- Delete any opening sentence that merely announces the topic.
- Replace one vague claim per paragraph with evidence or an example.
- Read aloud and fix repeated rhythm.
- Check facts, links, quotations, citations, and required AI disclosures.
Use the writing-pattern detector to find candidates for revision, then review the evidence rather than chasing a target score. For details about what the score can and cannot show, read the methodology and limitations.
